Inspector
Gadget
Imagine
this scenario. Little girl sitting in front of the television
watching Inspector Gadget during her school holidays. Now fast
forward about 10 or 11 years to the present, and the same girl
(although not quite so little now) is going to the cinema to
watch a film feeling very skeptical about it and thinking that
it will be yet another classic ruined by Hollywood. However,
this was not to be as instead of destroying the memories of
many people in this country the film builds on rather than detracts
from the original format of the cartoons.
The theme music is the same, the dog is the same, the niece
is the same. However sadly I can't remember whether or not there
was a car, I suspect that this may be Hollywood invention though,
despite this the car works very well. The story line was reasonably
believable and very amusing. What most excited me however was
the way that Rupert Everett portrayed the wonderfully evil doctor
Claw complete even to the white cat that he stroked.
The
one criticism that I have of this film is that they destroyed
the mystery over the identity of this evil madman. As the Inspector
Matthew Broderick does very well and is very funny in this light
hearted comedy for all the family. I know that sounds like a
complete cliché but it really is true as it fantastic
for kids and great nostalgia for anyone old enough to remember
the original series when it graced our screens.
Will this film mean that the good detective will find his way
back there again? I hope so.
